Tall Pine Scout Camp (1944-1945)
Year(s) Operated: 1944-1945
Location: Appomattox, VA
Following the abandonment of Camp Tye Brook in 1940, Piedmont Area Council negotiated the temporary use of several properties in Central and Southside Virginia.
For the summers of 1944 and 1945, the council secured the recently-built Holiday Lake 4-H Camp for its summer program but rebranded it as “Tall Pine Scout Camp.” The 1944 session at Holiday Lake, along with a program for African American Scouts at Green Pastures near Clifton Forge, was cancelled due to a Polio outbreak in the area. Despite this setback, the camp was highly successful the following year. Holiday Lake was, by far, the largest body of water that the local Boy Scouts had used to date, and its length allowed small boat sailing to be added to the summer camp offerings. With sixteen cabins, the camp could hold as many as 160 boys in a week.
